Coiote IoT DM for smart water metering, monitoring and management
Coiote IoT DM is an open, LwM2M-based network and device management layer between smart meters and sensors and your existing utility systems. It lets you manage multi-vendor devices through one HES instead of running separate HES platforms for different vendors, while collecting telemetry and managing devices throughout their lifecycle.
-
Meter layer - Connect meters and sensors running Anjay, Anjay Lite or another LwM2M client over NB-IoT or other communication technologies used in water metering.
-
Coiote IoT DM layer - collect telemetry data, monitor connectivity, manage device configuration and lifecycle, optimize battery usage and control access across the fleet.
-
MDM & enterprise systems - deliver device telemetry and device data through Kafka, REST API, Webhooks into your existing MDM, billing, customer service, and analytics systems.
Coiote does not replace your MDM or existing utility platforms. It adds an open network and device management layer underneath them, so you can integrate and manage devices without replacing your existing systems or changing how they work together.
Key business benefits
Avoid vendor lock-in by standard
Smart water meters and sensors can remain in the field for 15–20 years. An open management layer gives utilities more flexibility throughout that lifecycle, reducing dependence on individual suppliers, costly integrations and future technology changes.
-
Avoid vendor lock-in - switch or add meter or sensor suppliers without replacing the management layer.
- Standardize data and operations - use LwM2M Objects and Resources as a common model for device data, capabilities and operations across manufacturers.
-
Simplify integration - connect devices, LwM2M-based HES, MDM and enterprise systems through one standard approach, instead of a separate integration for each supplier.
-
Strengthen procurement flexibility - buy meters from multiple manufacturers that implement LwM2M, so each new supplier works with your existing integration.
-
Future-proof your investment - build on the open LwM2M standard and evolving industry profiles, such as Water 2.0
Monitor and manage meters or sensors remotely at scale
When a device goes offline or needs an update, sending a technician is slow and expensive. Coiote gives operations teams the tools to detect issues early, act remotely and manage thousands of devices from one place.
-
Update firmware in bulk - roll out FOTA across device groups and track the status and result of every update.
-
Configure fleets at scale - apply settings and actions to groups of devices across different manufacturers.
-
Identify and resolve issues remotely - check connectivity, signal strength, battery, logs and events, then reboot or run commands without a site visit.
- Act on problems early - receive alerts when devices disconnect or report an alarm, through email or integrated operations tools.
Integrate Coiote IoT DM into your existing water-metering architecture
Add LwM2M network and device management to your existing MDM and billing environment without replacing the systems already in place.
-
Integrate without rebuilding - REST API, Kafka and webhooks connect Coiote with HES, MDM, billing, analytics and other enterprise systems.
-
Keep data where it needs to be - deploy in the EU, Australia or US, in your private cloud or on-premises to meet data residency and infrastructure requirements.
-
Secure the meter connection - use DTLS/TLS, PSK or certificates, with EST certificate management and automated bootstrap.
-
Support different operating models - multi-tenancy and role-based access let you securely manage meters for multiple utilities, councils or partners from one platform.
Let's build a smart water metering standard together
Open Mobile Alliance's Utilities Working Group has launched Water 2.0, a vendor-neutral interoperability framework based on LwM2M 1.2.2. It defines testable requirements for onboarding, updates, recovery and integration, helping utilities include interoperability in procurement and support a 10–15-year meter lifecycle.
As an Open Mobile Alliance member, AVSystem contributes to the profiles, testing events and conformance work. With Coiote and Anjay, we support LwM2M interoperability on both the server and device sides.

FAQ
We already run an LwM2M server or HES. Why change?
If several platforms manage different parts of your fleet, device operations, diagnostics and FOTA can become fragmented. Coiote provides a common LwM2M device management layer across vendors and connectivity types. You can migrate devices in waves using LwM2M bootstrap, while existing systems continue operating, avoiding the need for a disruptive, fleet-wide switchover.
Can Coiote IoT DM handle our fleet size?
Coiote supports deployments ranging from pilots to millions of connected devices. Its capabilities include bulk operations, automated device grouping, monitoring and large-scale FOTA management. You can expand in phases while maintaining visibility and control over fleet operations.
Isn’t this just another platform to be locked into?
Coiote is built on the open LwM2M standard, helping you avoid dependence on a single device manufacturer or proprietary device management protocol. Standard-compliant devices can be managed by other compatible LwM2M servers, while open interfaces enable integration with your existing systems. You retain flexibility over your device ecosystem and future platform choices.
Will Coiote IoT DM replace our MDM or our partner’s platform?
No. Coiote complements your existing MDM, billing and analytics systems by managing the device layer underneath them. It handles device connectivity, monitoring, configuration, diagnostics and firmware updates, while your existing systems continue to manage their respective business processes. APIs and event interfaces connect device-level operations with your existing architecture.
How do you handle security and data sovereignty?
AVSystem is ISO/IEC 27001 certified. Coiote supports security mechanisms including DTLS/TLS, PSK and certificate-based authentication, EST certificate lifecycle management, role-based access controls, tenant separation and SSO. IPsec tunnels can provide an additional layer of network-level protection for deployments requiring secure communication across private networks. Deployment options include SaaS in supported regional environments, private cloud and on-premises installations, helping you meet security and data residency requirements.
What does device management do to battery life?
LwM2M over CoAP/UDP supports lightweight communication patterns suited to battery-powered meters expected to operate for 10–15 years. Coiote supports queue mode and configurable reporting and notification frequencies to help reduce unnecessary communication. Efficient data transfer and DTLS Connection ID, where supported by the device and configuration, can further reduce communication overhead and repeated security handshakes. Actual battery consumption depends on device implementation, network conditions and management settings.
Is AVSystem a safe partner for a 10–15-year programme?
AVSystem brings 18 years of industry experience, more than 250 customers across 60 countries and a team of more than 200 employees. Its dedicated IoT engineering expertise and experience with industrial and telecommunications deployments provide a foundation for long-term cooperation.
Coiote's use of open standards and interfaces helps protect your investment from proprietary technology dependencies. Flexible deployment options support different infrastructure and data sovereignty requirements, while ongoing platform maintenance, software updates and security improvements help keep deployments operational as technology evolves. Enterprise support and SLA arrangements can provide an agreed framework for service continuity and issue resolution throughout the programme.
How can you manage FOTA at scale?
Coiote helps manage firmware updates across heterogeneous fleets through capabilities designed to make large-scale campaigns more controlled and predictable:
-
Device grouping - Organize devices by manufacturer, model, firmware version or other relevant attributes to target the right devices with the right firmware.
-
Configurable campaigns - Adapt update parameters to different device types and deployment requirements.
-
Phased rollouts - Update devices in batches to control campaign progression and avoid unnecessary simultaneous traffic.
-
Monitoring and diagnostics -Track update progress and device status to identify failures and investigate issues.
-
Failure handling - Use available status and error information to distinguish temporary connectivity issues from problems requiring intervention before retrying.
-
Remote management - Perform firmware maintenance remotely, reducing the need for costly field visits.
Can Coiote IoT DM automate alerts and workflows?
Yes. Coiote can monitor data reported by your meters and pass relevant events to your operational systems through APIs and event interfaces. For example, when a meter reports a battery level below 10%, an integrated workflow can email the responsible team or create a maintenance ticket. This helps you respond to issues without manually checking each meter. Email delivery and ticket creation require integration with the relevant systems.
How can LwM2M simplify procurement?
OMA’s Water 2.0 initiative, which AVSystem participates in, is developing a common LwM2M profile for smart water metering. The aim is to give utilities a shared set of requirements they can reference in tenders and use to assess different suppliers. This can make offers easier to compare and reduce vendor-specific integration work, while preserving flexibility to source compatible meters from multiple manufacturers.
