What is TR-369?

TR-369, also known as the User Services Platform (USP), is a modern, advanced protocol developed by the Broadband Forum as the official successor to TR-069. While TR-069 has served as the industry standard for remote management for years, TR-369 was purpose-built to meet the demands of today’s complex, multi-service networks. TR-369 provides enhanced capabilities, such as real-time data exchange, improved scalability, and robust security, making it the ideal choice for managing smart homes, IoT ecosystems, and next-generation service provider environments.

How does TR-369 work?

TR-369 facilitates secure, efficient, and scalable communication between a Controller (the management entity) and an Agent (the device, such as a gateway, router, or smart home sensor). Unlike its predecessor, TR-369 is designed natively for real-time, bi-directional, and event-driven communication. A key architectural evolution is that a single device (Agent) can be managed by multiple Controllers simultaneously, allowing for far more flexible service management.

Key components of TR-369

  • Real-Time Communication: Enables instant updates and configuration updates, providing a highly dynamic and responsive management environment.
  • Advanced Data Models: Supports a richer set of data models (Device:2), allowing for granular control over highly diverse device types.
  • Message Queuing & Transport: Utilizes modern transports like MQTT, WebSockets, or STOMP to ensure reliable command delivery even in fluctuating network conditions.
  • Device Discovery and Multi-Controller Support: Automatically discovers devices and allows different entities (e.g., an ISP and a Smart Home provider) to manage specific services on the exact same physical device.
  • End-to-End Security: Implements advanced security protocols, including mandatory TLS encryption and fine-grained access control for different Controllers.

Why is TR-369 important for service providers?

TR-369 is critical for providers managing diverse networks that extend beyond traditional broadband to include a wide array of IoT and Smart Home devices. The protocol’s real-time nature and massive scalability enable providers to deliver highly responsive services, perform instant troubleshooting, and offer new, revenue-generating features like advanced analytics or home security management.

TR-369 Controller Functionality in AVSystem’s Hybrid Platform

AVSystem provides a unified Hybrid Management Platform that acts simultaneously as both a TR-069 ACS and a TR-369 Controller. This allows service providers to manage their entire device fleet from a single interface, ensuring a seamless, risk-free migration path from legacy CWMP to modern USP.

Features of the TR-369 Controller in our platform:

  • Real-Time Bi-directional Communication: Instant, event-driven interaction between the Controller and managed Agents for immediate alerts, updates, and changes.
  • Massive Scalability: Engineered from the ground up to handle the high-frequency messaging required to manage millions of USP-enabled devices.
  • Enhanced Security Framework: State-of-the-art encryption and mutual authentication ensure all Controller-Agent interactions remain protected.
  • Customizable Data Models: Full support for standard and custom USP data models to suit unique device requirements.
  • Multi-Tenant & Multi-Controller Support: Manage multiple clients or completely separate service layers from a single, unified platform instance.

Key use cases for TR-369 in ACS

  • Smart Home Ecosystems: Manage and configure everything from security cameras to smart thermostats with real-time responsiveness.
  • Instant Service Provisioning: Drastically reduce activation times and improve customer satisfaction with immediate, over-the-air service setup.
  • IoT Fleet Management: Efficiently secure, monitor, and update a diverse array of enterprise and consumer IoT devices.

Security considerations with TR-369

Security is a core pillar of TR-369. Our platform implements robust measures to ensure safe operations:

  • End-to-End Encryption: All data exchanged between the Controller and Agents is encrypted using the latest TLS standards.
  • Mutual Authentication: Both the Controller and the Agent must verify their identities to completely prevent unauthorized access or man-in-the-middle attacks.
  • Granular Access Control: Define precise permissions, determining exactly which Controller can access or modify specific device parameters.
